The tree “Dicke Marie” in Berlin

The tree "Dicke Marie" is a common oak (Quercus robur) in Tegel and one of Berlin's oldest trees. The Dicke Marie is not only one of the oldest trees in Berlin, it also belongs to Germany's 100 most important trees. Since the 9th of July 2021, the tree is a National Heritage Tree.

As a National Heritage Tree, the Dicke Marie is allowed to age in dignity. It is estimated that the tree has an age of about 800 years. The Dicke Marie has a height of about 18,5m and a trunk circumference of almost 6m.

Trees like the Dicke Marie sequester carbon. They stabilize soils. They provide food for a great variety of animals.

And thus, they support wildlife and we need intact forests with old trees!

That is why I decided to dedicate this blog post to one of Berlin's most famous, interesting, and important trees.

I visited the Dicke Marie this year several times. In winter, spring, summer, and autumn. If you have the chance to visit the Dicke Marie, don't hesitate and enjoy every minute next to this impressive tree.
