The tree "Dicke Marie" is a common oak (Quercus robur) in Tegel and one of Berlin's oldest trees. The Dicke Marie is not only one of the oldest trees in Berlin, it also belongs to Germany's 100 most important trees. Since the 9th of July 2021, the tree is a National Heritage Tree.
As a National Heritage Tree, the Dicke Marie is allowed to age in dignity. It is estimated that the tree has an age of about 800 years. The Dicke Marie has a height of about 18,5m and a trunk circumference of almost 6m.
Trees like the Dicke Marie sequester carbon. They stabilize soils. They provide food for a great variety of animals.
And thus, they support wildlife and we need intact forests with old trees!
That is why I decided to dedicate this blog post to one of Berlin's most famous, interesting, and important trees.
I visited the Dicke Marie this year several times. In winter, spring, summer, and autumn. If you have the chance to visit the Dicke Marie, don't hesitate and enjoy every minute next to this impressive tree.
Dicke Marie in winter
I visited the Dicke Marie for the first time on the 7th of March 2022. It was a cold day. Winter was almost over and spring was about to begin.
Dicke Marie in spring
My second visit took place on the 22nd of May. Spring was already in full swing. The Dicke Marie and all the other trees around had already awoken from winter.
Dicke Marie in summer
On the 20th of August I visited the Dicke Marie again. Summer was almost over. It was a rainy day when I visited the tree a third time. It was still warm, but autumn was already about to arrive.
Dicke Marie in autumn
Autumn is a beautiful season. Especially when the days are bright and the light and the leaves of the trees shine golden. Regardless whether it is spring, summer, autumn or winter, every season is special for visiting the Dicke Marie.
