One good spot to observe these ground dwelling rodents are the Blumeng\u00e4rten Hirschstetten in the north of the city. Or any type of grassland. But also, lawns, parks and any other man-made habitat. Both are animals with slim bodies and bushy tails.<\/p>\n<p>However, not all animals of the squirrel family are like that.<\/p>\n<p>Just think of the Alpine marmots. Even in Brazil. The European ground squirrel is one species. Other species are, for example, speckled ground squirrels (<em>Spermophilus suslicus<\/em>) or Anatolian ground squirrels (<em>Spermophilus xanthoprymnus<\/em>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-22533-9\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-22533-9-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-22533-9-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"10\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Another genus within the <em>Sciuridae<\/em> family are prairie dogs (<em>Cynomys<\/em>). href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/mspecies\/article\/46\/913\/71\/2643020?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">study<\/a> it was shown that European ground squirrels might even feed on voles, mice, shrews, moles, and hedgehogs!<\/p>\n<p>Reading more about these facts was indeed quite surprising for me, because rodents are principally herbivores. On the other hand, rodents like alpine marmots, as well, do not exclusively feed on plants. They, for example, might also feed on <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife-travel.com\/en\/alpine-marmots-on-the-koenigsbachalm-at-the-jenner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insects, spiders or worms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As European ground squirrels are interesting and enchanting animals, I decided to pay them a visit when I was in Vienna. Before I started to write about these magnificent animals on this blog, however, I was asking myself a very important question.<\/p>\n<p>Should I share the name of the place where the European ground squirrels can be found in Vienna? It is a place just next to a housing development. Furthermore, people that wish to see these animals will find out about them anyway quite quickly. There are even theme playgrounds like the one about insects. Especially important to mention is that they also have an environmental program. I didn\u2019t want to disturb this animal.<\/p>\n<p>Although these European ground squirrels live in the middle of a public area - here on a playground! - I thought they might be used to people.<\/p>\n<p>But still, this animal was quite shy, elusive, and even frightened!<\/p>\n<p>I only had a short moment alone with this individual. Just a few moments later, a group of preschool children arrived at the playground. But anyhow, it didn\u2019t really feel like having wild animals in front of me. The animals were shy and elusive. They didn\u2019t live in any enclosure. And they lived in their burrows.<\/p>\n<p>But they lived so close to a recreational area often filled with many people.<\/p>\n<p>It was difficult to think of \u201cwild animals\u201d in that case.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, I decided to look for another place to observe European ground squirrels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-22533-71\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-22533-71-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-22533-71-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-image panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"78\" experience.<\/p>\n<p>While the European ground squirrels in the Blumeng\u00e4rten Hirschstetten were already quite shy and elusive, the animals at that other place typically vanished even before seeing me.<\/p>\n<p>There were two meadows.<\/p>\n<p>On the first meadow I could not get a close-up of any ground squirrel.<\/p>\n<p>But on the second meadow (closer to the houses), one individual remained at its burrow entrance observing me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-22533-73\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-22533-73-0\" possible. Every move might frighten the animal.<\/p>\n<p>It was the only individual I saw at that place. But it showed up several times.<\/p>\n<p>When it was down in its burrow, I moved a little bit closer to the burrow and sat down quietly again.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, I didn\u2019t frighten the squirrel. On the first visit it was quite hot and humid. On the second visit I was longing for a quiet and \u201cboring\u201d place like those meadows, as in the morning I was in the zoo of Vienna. It was such a contrast. Although I'm okay with visiting a zoo, it felt quite busy there. And on those two meadows, on the other hand, I was quite far away from all the people and the rush of zoo visitors.
